Ruling on Sitting in the Second Rakʿah of Three-Rakʿah Witr and the Authentic Ḥadīth

❖ Question:

Please mention the authentic ḥadīth which states that one should not sit in qaʿdah (tashahhud) during the second rakʿah when praying three rakʿahs of Witr.

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!

In al-Mustadrak of al-Ḥākim, there is a marfūʿ ḥadīth narrated by Umm al-Muʾminīn ʿĀʾishah Ṣiddīqah (رضي الله عنها):

«کَانَ رَسُوْلُ اﷲِ ﷺ يُؤْتِرُ بِثَلاَثٍ لاَ يَقْعُدُ اِلاَّ فِیْ آخِرِهِنَّ»

"The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ used to pray three rakʿahs of Witr and would not sit (for tashahhud) except in the last of them."

In some printed editions of the ḥadīth, the word "لاَ يَقْعُدُ" has been placed in the footnote, and "لاَ يُسَلِّمُ" was inserted in the main text. However, this is incorrect. Scholars, including in Talkhīṣ al-Dhahabī and other early references, have clarified that the correct and authentic wording is indeed "لاَ يَقْعُدُ".
