❀ The Questions
① Was Salat (Durud) upon the Prophet ﷺ ever recited in his presence, or did he himself command it?
② Can one say “عليه الصلاة والسلام” instead of “صلى الله عليه وسلم”?
❀ The Answer
Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!
✿ 1. Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ in his presence
In Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Bab Nuzul ‘Isa ibn Maryam, it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself recited the words “صلى الله عليه وسلم.”
All books of hadith affirm that the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) also used to say “صلى الله عليه وسلم” in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.
This is sufficient as a taqreeri hadith (an action or statement done in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and approved by his silence). Since the Companions used this phrase before him and the Prophet ﷺ did not forbid it, it stands established.
✿ 2. Ruling on “عليه الصلاة والسلام”
As for the phrase “عليه الصلاة والسلام,” I do not know of any narration specifically reporting it.

(This is what I hold, and Allah knows best what is correct.)
