❖ Question

Can a menstruating woman perform the Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah?

❖ Answer

A menstruating woman cannot perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah. The ruling of Tawaf of the Ka‘bah and Sa‘i is the same.

❀ Abu al-ʿAliyah (رحمه الله) said:

لا تقرأ القرآن، ولا تصلي، ولا تطوف بالبيت، ولا بين الصفا والمروة، وقال: الطواف بين الصفا والمروة عدل الطواف بالبيت.

“A menstruating woman cannot recite the Qur’an, cannot pray, cannot perform Tawaf of the Ka‘bah, and cannot perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah. He said: The Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah is equivalent to the Tawaf of the Ka‘bah.”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, 4/325 – sanad is sahih)

❀ ʿAllamah Ibn Battal (رحمه الله, 449H) said:

لا خلاف بين العلماء أن الحائض لا تطوف بالبيت، ولا تسعى بين الصفا والمروة.

“There is no difference among the scholars that a menstruating woman can neither perform the Tawaf of the Ka‘bah nor the Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah.”
(Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, 4/230)
