Is it necessary for a woman to wait a full 40 days after childbirth before resuming acts of worship?
If she stops bleeding earlier, can she begin offering prayers and fasting before 40 days?
Also, some women are seen fasting but not praying during this period — what is the correct practice?
It is not obligatory to wait forty days after childbirth if the postpartum bleeding stops earlier.
➤ The woman should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and begin offering prayers, even if it is just one day after delivery.
➤ There is no requirement to wait for forty days if purity is attained earlier.
The maximum period of nifās is forty days as established by the practice during the Prophet’s (ﷺ) time.
Sayyidah Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) narrated:
"Women experiencing postpartum bleeding during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would remain (refrain from prayer etc.) for forty days."
(Abu Dāwūd, al-Ṭahārah; al-Tirmidhī, al-Ṭahārah; Ibn Mājah, al-Ṭahārah)
Even if bleeding persists, the woman should perform ghusl and start praying.
Now, her condition falls under the ruling of istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding) —
➤ She must perform ablution (wudūʼ) for each prayer and continue her acts of worship.
Fasting while neglecting prayer is incorrect and impermissible.
➤ Both prayer and fasting become obligatory once the woman is pure from nifās.
Neglecting salah while observing sawm is a contradiction in religious practice.
✔ Begin worship immediately after bleeding stops — no need to wait 40 days.
✔ If bleeding exceeds 40 days, it is considered istiḥāḍah and worship should be resumed.
✔ Prayer and fasting are both obligatory once purification is attained.
