Ruling on Reciting the Qur’an During Menstruation

Source: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

❖ Question

Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to recite the Qur’an?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ Permission to Recite in Specific Situations

It is permissible for a menstruating woman to recite the Qur’an if there is a genuine need, such as:

  • If she is a teacher and needs to recite for teaching purposes.
  • If she is a student and must recite for learning purposes.
  • If she teaches her children the Qur’an, she may recite the verses to them for instruction.

Summary:
If there is a necessity, she may recite the Qur’an during menstruation, and there is no harm in doing so.

✿ If There Is Fear of Forgetting the Qur’an

If a woman fears that she might forget the Qur’an, she may recite it during menstruation to preserve her memorization.

✿ Scholarly Opinions

  1. Some scholars say it is ḥarām for a menstruating woman to recite the Qur’an, even in case of necessity.
  2. Others allow it in cases of necessity.
  3. A third view permits it to preserve memorization.

✿ Preferred and Stronger Opinion

The stronger and more correct view is that when a woman needs to recite the Qur’an — for teaching, learning, or fear of forgetting — she is allowed to do so, and there is no harm.
