Ruling on Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah Behind the Imam: Qur’an and Ḥadīth Evidence
Question
Near our home there is a Ḥanafī Deobandī mosque where I pray. After ʿAṣr prayer on Wednesday, March 20, the Mawlānā said in his lecture:
"Whoever recites Sūrat al-Fātiḥah behind the imam will have burning embers of fire placed in his mouth on the Day of Judgment."
Hearing this statement caused me great distress. Please clarify this matter in the light of the Qur’an and Ḥadīth so that I may be at ease and rewarded with clarity from Allah.
✔ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
The statement that:
"Whoever recites Sūrat al-Fātiḥah behind the imam will have burning embers placed in his mouth on the Day of Judgment"
Report in Muwaṭṭaʾ Imām Muḥammad
One narration mentions:
«بَعْضُ وُلْدِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ: وَدِدْتُ أَنَّ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ فِي فِيهِ جَمْرَةٌ»
This is attributed to some descendants of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (RA).
- Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Ḥayy Lakhnawī (Ḥanafī scholar) clarified:
◈ The chain is unknown (majhūl).
◈ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said in al-Istidhkār: “This narration is munqaṭiʿ (disconnected) and not authentic.”
Another Report in Muwaṭṭaʾ Imām Muḥammad
«عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ: لَيْتَ فِي فَمِ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ حَجَراً»
Attributed to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA).
- Research shows:
◈ Reported through Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, who died in 148 AH.
◈ He could not have met ʿUmar (RA), thus the chain is disconnected and unauthentic.
Summary of Research
- The statements attributed to Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (RA) and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA) are weak and disconnected.
- Neither of them mentions anything about “burning embers in the mouth on the Day of Judgment.”
- The Mawlānā’s statement is not only absent from Qur’an and Sunnah, but even stronger and fabricated beyond what is reported in weak narrations.
Conclusion
The claim that “whoever recites al-Fātiḥah behind the imam will have burning embers placed in his mouth on the Day of Judgment” is:
It is a false and fabricated statement and cannot be attributed to Islam.
