Ruling on Reciting Salawat When the Prophet's ﷺ Name Is Mentioned During Recitation

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

When reciting (Qur’an or otherwise), whether in Salah or outside of it, what is the ruling if the name of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned—should one recite Salawat (Durūd) immediately?

❀ Answer:

✦ Yes, it is highly recommended (mustahabb) to immediately recite Salawat upon hearing or mentioning the name of the Prophet ﷺ, whether during recitation, in Salah, or outside of it—except when it disrupts obligatory acts in prayer.

✿ Evidences from Hadith:

① The Prophet ﷺ said:

"May his nose be rubbed in dust— the one in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send Salat upon me; the one who lives through Ramadan and is not forgiven; and the one whose parents attain old age with him, but he does not enter Paradise through serving them."**
(Sahih Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 281, authenticated by al-Albani)

② The Prophet ﷺ also said:

"The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send Salat upon me."
(Sahih Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2811)
Imam al-Tirmidhi said: “This Hadith is Hasan, Sahih, and Gharib.”

✿ Linguistic Emphasis:

The Arabic particle "فَ" (faʾ) used in the Hadith implies immediacy—thus, one should say:

  • اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ
  • Or simply: صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ

This is especially emphasized outside prayer. Within prayer, if one is reciting the Qur’an, scholars hold differing views:

  • If in obligatory Salah, maintain the sequence of the recitation.
  • If in optional recitation, reciting Salawat is encouraged but not mandatory.

✔ Summary:

① When the Prophet’s ﷺ name is mentioned, one should immediately recite Salawat.
② This applies both in and outside Salah, with more flexibility outside of it.
③ The command is backed by strong Hadiths, and neglecting it is deemed misery and stinginess.
