Ruling on Reciting Salawat When the Prophet’s ﷺ Name Appears in the Qur’an

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

While reciting the Qur’an, if the name of the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned, should Salawat (Durūd) be recited? What is the ruling both during Salah and outside of Salah?

❀ Answer:

**✦ The general meaning of the Hadiths about sending Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ indicates that it is recommended in both situationswhether during prayer (Salah) or outside of prayer.

✿ Supporting Principle:

The Hadiths urging the recitation of Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ are general in wording, such as:

"Whoever mentions me and does not send Salat upon me, let him be humiliated."

"The miser is he who hears my name and does not send Salat upon me."

These texts do not restrict the command to outside of prayer only.

✿ Practical Application:

  • Outside Salah: When reciting the Qur’an and coming across the name “Muḥammad”, reciting Salawat is recommended and appropriate.
  • During Salah:
    • Scholars differ slightly, but the preferred opinion is:
      • If the mention occurs in non-obligatory portions of recitation (e.g., optional recitation beyond Fātiḥah), it is permissible and praiseworthy to silently say Salawat.
      • In the obligatory recitation (like Fātiḥah), or when it may cause interruption, it may be omitted to maintain the flow of the prayer.

✔ Summary:

Reciting Salawat upon encountering the Prophet’s ﷺ name in the Qur’an is recommended in all situations.
During prayer, it is allowed if it does not interrupt the structure of Salah.
③ The general wording of Hadiths about Salawat supports this practice in both states.
