Ruling on Reciting Duʿā al-Qunūt Before Rukūʿ While Folding Hands

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadīyyah, Vol. 1, p. 505

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to recite Duʿā al-Qunūt before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded? Is there any ḥadīth or practice of the Companions that supports this?

✿ Answer:

Al-ḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

◄ In Qiyām al-Layl by al-Marwazī, it is mentioned regarding some of the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم that they recited Duʿā al-Qunūt before rukūʿ while keeping their hands folded.

◄ Our teacher, Shaykh al-Kull, Ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad Muḥaddith Gondalvī رحمه الله, stated in his fatwā:

“Duʿā al-Qunūt is authentically reported from the Companions رضي الله عنهم in both forms – before rukūʿ and after rukūʿ.”
(Juz’ Rafʿ al-Yadayn)

“And reciting the supplication before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded has also been reported from some Companions.”
(Qiyām al-Layl)

— al-ʿAbd Muḥammad Gondalvī, 14-2-236

Conclusion:
Yes, reciting Duʿā al-Qunūt before rukūʿ while keeping the hands folded is permissible, and it is supported by the practice of some of the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم.
