Ruling on Reciting “Bismillah” Aloud in Salah
Source: Fatawa Arkan-e-Islam
What is the ruling on reciting “Bismillah” aloud (jahr) during Salah?
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
The stronger and more correct opinion is that “Bismillah” should not be recited aloud in Salah. The Sunnah is to recite it quietly (sirran), because:
◈ “Bismillah” is not an ayah of Surah Al-Fatihah [1].
Thus, the better practice is to recite “Bismillah” quietly.
If, in certain situations, reciting “Bismillah” aloud can help in winning over the hearts of those who follow that practice, then there is hope that it will be permissible.
[1] There is a difference of opinion on whether “Bismillah” is an ayah of Surah Al-Fatihah.

Occasional Aloud Recitation
- If “Bismillah” is occasionally recited aloud, there is no harm.
- Some scholars even consider occasional aloud recitation recommended (mustahabb), based on reports that the Prophet ﷺ at times recited “Bismillah” aloud.
- However, the most authentic narrations show that the Prophet ﷺ generally did not recite it aloud.
Thus, the better practice is to recite “Bismillah” quietly.
For Reconciliation and Softening Hearts
If, in certain situations, reciting “Bismillah” aloud can help in winning over the hearts of those who follow that practice, then there is hope that it will be permissible.

[1] There is a difference of opinion on whether “Bismillah” is an ayah of Surah Al-Fatihah.
- The stronger view is that it is indeed part of Surah Al-Fatihah (see: Al-Silsilah al-Sahihah, Hadith: 1183).
- However, this does not necessitate reciting it aloud in Salah.
- This depends on the Prophet’s ﷺ actual practice, and most authentic Ahadith show that he recited “Bismillah” quietly.
- For this reason, reciting it quietly is the stronger opinion.
