Ruling on Qur’an Recitation Ceremonies During Friday Khutbah

❖ Ruling on Reciting a Qur'an Memorization Lesson During the Friday Khutbah ❖

❀ Question:

Is it permissible to have a child recite the final lesson of his Qur’an memorization during the Friday Khutbah — specifically between the first and second Khutbah — and to adorn the teacher and student with flower garlands during this interval?

✿ Response by:
Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (حفظه الله)

① Ruling on Other Activities Between the Two Khutbahs:

✘ Engaging in any unrelated activity during the Friday Khutbah — even during the pause between the two parts — is not appropriate.

✘ It goes against the etiquette of Jumu‘ah to conduct events like lesson recitations or ceremonies during the khutbah or its brief pause.

✔ Full attention should be devoted to the sermon and its objectives during Jumu‘ah.

② Forcing Ceremonies or Lessons on the Audience:

✘ Conducting a lesson or ceremony during the khutbah break without the audience’s consent contradicts the spirit and decorum of Jumu‘ah.

✘ Such acts can undermine the sanctity and purpose of the Friday prayer, and are considered a violation of the mosque’s sanctity and etiquette.

③ Permissibility After the Jumu‘ah Prayer:

After the Jumu‘ah prayer, holding a ceremony to listen to a student’s memorization is permissible.

✔ If people wish to stay, they may do so; if not, it is up to them. But it is not allowed to conduct such activities during the khutbah or its intervals.

✅ Summary:

✘ Reciting a Qur’an memorization lesson and holding related ceremonies between the two Friday sermons is against the etiquettes of Jumu‘ah.

✔ The appropriate time for such an event is after the Friday prayer, whether people stay to attend or not.
