Ruling on Qasr Prayer for Travel Beyond Nineteen or Twenty Days

✿ Sourced from: Aḥkām wa Masā’il: Ṣalāh Section, Volume 1, Page 232

❖ Question

If a person travels for a year, less than a year, or more — should he continue offering Qasr prayer throughout, or not?

✦ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!

✔ If a person is in a state of travel, and during that travel he makes an intention to stay in one place, then the Prophet ﷺ is not reported to have offered Qasr prayer beyond 19 or 20 days of such intended residence.

✿ The Ruling in Detail:

If the person intends to stay for less than 19 or 20 days at a location:

◈ He should continue to offer Qasr (shortened) prayer, as he remains within the Shar‘i definition of a traveler.

If the intention is to stay for more than 19 or 20 days:

◈ He must offer the full prayer (i.e., four rak‘ahs in Dhuhr, ‘Asr, and ‘Isha).

✔ Summary:

❖ The practice of the Prophet ﷺ does not support offering Qasr beyond an intended stay of 19 or 20 days at one location.

❖ Therefore:

Less than 19–20 daysQasr is valid
More than 19–20 daysFull prayers must be performed
