Ruling on Praying Alone in the Last Row Without Excuse

❖ Question:

What is the ruling for someone who stands alone in a row during congregational prayer if there is no space in the front row? Please clarify the scholars’ position on this matter.

Answer by: Fadhilat al-Bahith Nu'man Khaliq (ḥafiẓahullāh)

If a person wishes to join the congregational prayer and the front row is already full, then he should first try to find a way to join the front row by making space. If that is not possible, then the following options can be considered:

① Attempt to Stand to the Right Side of the Imam

◈ If there is an opportunity to stand to the right side of the Imam without difficulty, then he should stand there.

Ruling on Standing Alone Behind the Row

◈ If there is absolutely no room in the front row, only then is it permissible to stand alone in the row behind. In this case, the person is considered to have a valid excuse (maʿdhūr).
◈ A woman's prayer alone behind the row is valid, but using this as evidence for men to stand alone in the row is incorrect.

③ It is Not Permissible to Pull Someone Back from the Front Row

◈ If there are two or more people in the congregation, it is not correct to pull someone from the front row to form a new row behind.
◈ However, authentic Sharʿī proofs indicate that under no circumstances should a person pray alone in the back row.

❖ Evidence from Hadith

Sayyidunā ʿAlī ibn Shaybān رضي الله عنه narrates:

"We arrived in Madinah and pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ. Then we prayed with him. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ saw a man who had prayed alone behind the row. When he finished, the Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Repeat your prayer, for there is no prayer for the one who stands alone behind the row.'”

📖 [Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah: 829]

This ḥadīth clearly prohibits praying alone behind the row, and the command of the Prophet ﷺ to repeat the prayer indicates that it is not valid to pray alone behind the row.

Correct Procedure

✔ If there is no space in the front row, stand next to the Imam.
✔ If standing with the Imam is not possible, try to bring someone from the next row to join you.
Only if all efforts fail may one pray alone behind the row, and that too with a valid excuse.
Without a valid excuse, praying alone behind the row is not permissible.

Conclusion

Authentic and sound evidence indicates that a man should not pray alone in the back row. Rather, he should try to include someone with him and perform the prayer together.
