Ruling on Performing Nafl Prayers After Tahiyyat al-Masjid When Adhan Is Called

Ruling on Offering Voluntary Prayers After Tahiyyat al-Masjid When the Adhan Is Given
Taken from: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

❖ Question:

If a person enters the mosque, performs Tahiyyat al-Masjid, and then the Mu’adhdhin calls the Adhan, can he offer voluntary prayers in that situation?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd!

If the Adhan is for Fajr or Ẓuhr, then after the Mu’adhdhin finishes:

❀ Before Fajr — perform two rakʿahs of Sunnah prayer.
❀ Before Ẓuhr — perform four rakʿahs of Sunnah prayer.

These are Sunnah Mu’akkadah and carry great reward.

If the Adhan is for any other prayer — such as ʿAṣr, Maghrib, or ʿIshāʾ — then offering voluntary prayers is still a Sunnah practice.

The evidence is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:

«بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Adhān, Bāb Bayna Kulli Adhānatayn Ṣalāh, ḥadīth no. 627)
“Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer.”

This Hadith clearly shows that performing voluntary prayers between the Adhan and the Iqamah is a legislated and recommended act.
