Ruling on Performing Multiple Umrahs While Residing in Makkah

Authored by: Shaykh Mubashar Ahmad Rabbani (حفظه الله)

❖ Ruling on Performing More Than One Umrah

Question:
Is there any prohibition against performing multiple Umrahs while residing in Makkah? Please clarify.

Answer:
It is permissible to perform more than one Umrah while residing in Makkah Mukarramah, just as it is permissible to frequently perform Tawaf of the Ka'bah. To do so, one may enter into Ihram from outside the Haram boundary, such as Sayyidah Aishah’s (رضي الله عنها) Ihram from Miqāt at Tanʿīm (Masjid Aishah). Alternatively, one may also enter into Ihram from within the Haram area, including from one’s residence in Makkah.

As narrated from Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
“Those who are within the boundaries (of Miqat) should enter Ihram from their place of residence... even the people of Makkah should enter Ihram from Makkah itself.”
[Bukhari, Book of Hajj: Chapter on the Miqat for the People of Sham, 1526]

If someone claims that repeatedly performing Umrah while residing in Makkah is not established from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), the answer is: frequently performing Tawaf while in Makkah is also not directly narrated. After performing Umrah, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his companions camped outside Makkah at Abtah and then proceeded to Mina on 8th Dhul-Hijjah. If one argues that Tawaf is not prohibited, the same applies to Umrah, which is also not prohibited.
