❖ The Ruling on Performing Multiple ʿUmrahs During a Single Journey ❖
Fatwa by: Fadhīlat al-Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh
If a person goes for ʿUmrah and wishes to perform multiple ʿUmrahs during the same journey, is there a prescribed limit—such as two or four times—or may he perform as many as he wishes by returning to a nearby Miqāt and re-entering in iḥrām?
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ performed four ʿUmrahs during his lifetime. Based on this, the general and preferred practice, according to the majority of scholars, is to perform only one ʿUmrah per journey.
✔ Majority View:
Most scholars maintain that one ʿUmrah per journey is sufficient and aligns with the Prophetic Sunnah.
✔ Permissibility View:
However, some scholars allow for multiple ʿUmrahs in a single journey, especially considering the difficulty of travel and the limited opportunity to visit the Ḥaram.
They refer to the ḥadīth:
"Perform Ḥajj and ʿUmrah repeatedly one after the other..."
(يَتْبَعُ بَعْضُهُمَا بَعْضًا) — which implies encouragement toward regular Ḥajj and ʿUmrah.
✔ If a person returns to a Miqāt or a place outside the Ḥaram boundary (such as Masjid ʿĀʾishah in Tanʿīm) and re-enters with a new iḥrām,
then performing multiple ʿUmrahs in the same trip is permissible.
This opinion is supported by practical necessity and by some classical scholars, and we also incline toward this permissibility, provided it is done properly and respectfully.
• It should not become a burden or lead to unnecessary hardship.
• The intention should remain sincere and not merely ritualistic or competitive.
• Priority must always be given to performing ʿUmrah with khushūʿ (humility) and proper etiquettes.
