The Question
What is the ruling regarding remaining silent after Surah al-Fātiḥah and before starting another sūrah?
Is it authentically proven from the Prophet ﷺ that he would pause between reciting al-Fātiḥah and the subsequent sūrah?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh.
It is not proven from the Prophet ﷺ that he used to have a long pause after Surah al-Fātiḥah before reciting another sūrah.
Scholars’ View
- According to the jurists, the imam may pause briefly to allow the congregation to complete their recitation of al-Fātiḥah.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Practice
- The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would only have a very short and brief pause after al-Fātiḥah.
- This brief pause served two purposes:
- To take a breath.
- To give the follower (ma’mūm) a chance to complete his recitation of al-Fātiḥah, even if the imam continued reciting.
Nature of the Pause
- The pause was extremely short, without any notable length.
- It did not resemble a prolonged silence.
Conclusion:
The Sunnah is to have only a slight and brief pause after Surah al-Fātiḥah, not a lengthy silence.
