If a person misses fasts due to illness and makes up for them later, does he also have to give fidya?
And what if someone is chronically ill and unable to fast during Ramadan or afterward—should they only give fidya? Also, what is the amount of fidya?
① If someone misses fasts due to temporary illness and later makes up the missed fasts (qaḍāʾ):
✔ No fidya is required.
➡ Only making up the missed fasts is obligatory.
This is based on the Qur'anic verse:
“...فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ...”
(Surah al-Baqarah, 2:184)
② If someone is chronically ill, with no hope of recovery (i.e. never expected to regain the ability to fast):
✔ Such a person does not have to make up fasts,
but must give fidya in place of each missed fast.
Fidya amount:
– Feeding one poor person (مسکین) per missed fast.
– This should be a full meal, based on the person’s normal household routine.
It may be provided as:
