Sitting in Mourning Gatherings for Three Days After Death
Taken from: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
❖ Question:
What is the ruling on sitting in gatherings (phori) for three days after a person’s death?
❖ Answer:
In Islam, mourning (sog) is prescribed only for women, not for men. Therefore, the practice of phori has no legitimacy.
✿ Imam al-Turtushi (رحمه الله, 520H) said:
أما الماتم، فممنوعة بإجماع العلماء وهو بدعة منكرة… وكذلك ما بعده من الإجتماع فى الثاني والثالث والسابع والشهر والسنة، فهو طامة
“There is consensus among scholars on the prohibition of mourning gatherings (maatam). It is an evil innovation, with no basis in Islam. Likewise, the gatherings held on the second, third, seventh day, or after a month or a year are also a great calamity.”
