Ruling on Moon Sighting After Zenith on the 29th of Ramadan

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

If the moon is sighted after zawāl (midday) on the 29th of Ramadan, what is the ruling?

❖ Answer:

The fast should be broken on that day, Eid should be celebrated the next day, and one fast should be made up later so that the total of 29 fasts of the month are completed.

Sayyidunā Abū ʿUmayr bin Anas رضي الله عنه narrated from his uncle, who was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that:

"We did not see the crescent of Shawwāl, so we fasted the next morning. Then, later in the day, a caravan arrived and testified before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that they had seen the moon the previous evening.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded the people to break their fast on that day and go out to the Eid prayer the next morning."
