Ruling on Missed ‘Isha Prayer Due to Sleep

Source: Ahkam wa Masail in Light of the Qur'an and Hadith, Volume 02

❖ Question:

If a person, due to extreme fatigue, falls asleep at night and misses the ‘Isha prayer, should they perform only the obligatory part as Qada or offer the complete prayer including Sunnah?

❖ The Answer:

Sleeping before performing the ‘Isha prayer is discouraged in Hadith, yet if someone unintentionally falls asleep and misses the prayer, they should perform it as soon as they wake up.

This is based on the Hadith wherein the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once missed the Fajr prayer due to sleep. Upon waking after sunrise, he offered the complete prayer in congregation, including both Fard and Sunnah.

From this Hadith, it is evident that when a prayer is missed due to sleep or forgetfulness, the entire prayer should be performed upon remembering, not just the Fard part.

"The Prophet ﷺ once missed the Fajr prayer due to sleep, and upon waking after sunrise, he offered the full prayer in congregation."
(Mishkat, Tanzim Ahl-e-Hadith, Volume 22, Issue 12)

❖ Summary:

If the ‘Isha prayer is missed, it should be offered immediately upon waking.
◄ The entire prayer should be performed—both Fard and Sunnah, as illustrated by the example of the Prophet ﷺ with the Fajr prayer.
