Ruling on Marrying the Granddaughter of a Half-Brother in Islam

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on marrying the granddaughter of a paternal half-brother (ʿalātī brother)?

✿ Answer:

Such a marriage is prohibited and falls under the category of ḥarām (forbidden) relationships.

❀ Qur’anic Evidence:

وَبَنَاتُ ٱلْأَخِ

“And the daughters of your brother (are forbidden to you in marriage).”

📖 Sūrah al-Nisāʾ: 23

This prohibition applies to all types of brothers — whether they are:

Full brothers (ḥaqīqī)
Paternal half-brothers (ʿalātī)
Maternal half-brothers (akhiyāfī)

Moreover, the descendants of these daughters, including granddaughters, are also included in this prohibition.

Thus, just as it is impermissible to marry the daughter of a paternal half-brother, it is likewise ḥarām to marry his granddaughter.

✅ Key Ruling:

The granddaughter of an ʿalātī (paternal half) brother is a maḥram (permanently unmarriageable relative), and marrying her is not allowed under any circumstances.
