Ruling on Marrying a Wife’s Half-Sister (Same Father) in Islam

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on marrying a wife's paternal half-sister (i.e., same father, different mothers)?

✿ Answer:

It is not permissible to marry one’s wife’s paternal half-sister while the wife is still in the marriage.
This too falls under the prohibition of combining two sisters in one marriage.
Such a marriage is not allowed in Islam.

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿ وَأَنْ تَجْمَعُوا بَيْنَ الْأُخْتَيْنِ ﴾

📚 [Sūrat al-Nisā’: 23]

“And (also forbidden is) that you combine two sisters (in marriage at the same time).”

The word "sisters" here includes all types of sisters — whether they share the same father (paternal sisters), the same mother (maternal sisters), or are full sisters (same mother and father).

✔ Summary:

① It is forbidden to be married to a woman and her half-sister (same father) at the same time.
② The ruling applies to all categories of sisters.
③ Such a marriage is haram and not valid in Shari'ah.
