Zayd drank milk from Hindah. Is it permissible for Zayd to marry the granddaughter of Hindah’s husband from another wife (Zaynab)?
No, it is not permissible for Zayd to marry the granddaughter of his foster father (the husband of Hindah) from another wife.
Since Zayd drank Hindah’s milk, her husband becomes Zayd’s foster father, and his biological children become Zayd’s foster siblings. Consequently, the granddaughter of his foster sister is regarded as Zayd’s foster grandniece, a relation in which marriage is prohibited.
﴿وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ﴾
“And the daughters of your sisters (are forbidden to you in marriage).”
Surah al-Nisā’ (4): 23
This includes both biological and foster nieces (i.e., the daughters and granddaughters of foster sisters).
Thus, the prohibition that applies to blood relations equally applies to foster relations.
① Zayd’s marriage to the granddaughter of his foster sister is ḥarām (forbidden).
② Foster relationships (raḍāʿah) carry the same legal prohibitions as blood relationships (nasab).
③ Therefore, such a marriage is invalid in Islam.
