Ruling on Making Up a Missed Prayer Due to Menstruation
Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Question:
If the time for a prayer has entered but a woman has not yet prayed and then menstruation begins, will she have to make up that prayer after becoming pure?
Answer:
- If the time for prayer has begun but menstruation starts before she prays, then after becoming pure she does not have to make up that prayer.
- However, if the prayer time began and she delayed it out of laziness until the time ended, and menstruation started before she prayed, then after menstruation she must make up that prayer.
❀ Imam Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله and Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin رحمه الله said:
إذا حاضت فى وقت صلاة، فليس عليها قضاء تلك الصلاة، إلا أن يكون الوقت قد ذهب.
“If menstruation begins during the time of prayer, she is not required to make it up — except if the time has already passed, then she must make it up.”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 2/339, Sahih chain)
⚑ Important Note:
If menstruation ends shortly before the end of the prayer time, but not enough time remains for ghusl and praying within the time, then making up that prayer is still obligatory.
