❖ Question:
If someone forgets to perform the Sunnah of Fajr and remembers after praying Ẓuhr, what should he do?
❖ Answer:
Whenever he remembers, he should make them up.
Sayyidah Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) reported:
She saw the Prophet ﷺ praying two rak‘ahs after ʿAṣr, so she asked about them. The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“O daughter of Abū Umayyah! You asked about the two rak‘ahs after ʿAṣr. The fact is that some people from the tribe of ʿAbd al-Qays came to me and kept me busy, preventing me from performing the two rak‘ahs after Ẓuhr, so I am now making them up.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1233, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 833)
❖ Scholarly Explanations:
✿ Imām al-Khaṭṭābī (رحمه الله, 388H):
“This ḥadīth proves that missed nawāfil should be made up, not abandoned.”
(Aʿlām al-Ḥadīth, 1/655)
✿ Ḥāfiẓ al-Nawawī (رحمه الله, 676H):
“This ḥadīth proves that making up missed Sunnah Rawātib is recommended, and this is the correct opinion according to us.”
(Sharḥ al-Nawawī, 6/121)
✿ ʿAllāmah al-Ṭībī (رحمه الله, 743H):
“This ḥadīth proves that time-bound nawāfil, if missed, are to be made up just as the farā’iḍ are made up.”
(Sharḥ Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ, 4/1121)
✿ ʿAllāmah Ibn Abī al-ʿIzz al-Ḥanafī (رحمه الله, 792H):
“This ḥadīth proves that Sunnah Rawātib are to be made up if missed, and that it is permissible to make them up after ʿAṣr, just as it is permissible after Fajr; there is no difference between the two.”
(Al-Tanbīh ʿalā Mushkilāt al-Hidāyah, 2/694)
