Question:
Is it permissible to make duʿāʾ or recite something in sajdah (prostration) after completing ṣalāh?
Sajdah is one of the most beloved acts of worship to Allah. In this position, a servant demonstrates humility, submission, and servitude before their Lord by placing their most honored body part—the face—on the ground.
Prophetic Statement:
Narrated by Maʿdān ibn Abī Ṭalḥah al-Yaʿmurī (رضي الله عنه):
He asked Thawbān (رضي الله عنه), the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ, about a deed that would admit one to Paradise. After being asked three times, Thawbān said that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Perform many prostrations, because for every sajdah you make, Allah will raise you one level and erase one of your sins."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Faḍl al-Sujūd wa al-Ḥath ʿalayh, Ḥadīth 1093)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The servant is closest to his Lord during sajdah, so increase your supplications therein."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Mā Yuqāl fī al-Rukūʿ wa al-Sujūd, Ḥadīth 1083)
Performing sajdah after completing ṣalāh for the purpose of duʿāʾ or dhikr is permissible and a recommended (mustaḥabb) act.
✔ Sajdah is not restricted to within the prayer only.
✔ Supplication in sajdah—whether during or after prayer—is encouraged in the Sunnah.
➊ Making duʿāʾ or dhikr in sajdah after ṣalāh is permissible and supported by authentic narrations.
➋ Sajdah is one of the most beloved acts to Allah, and duʿāʾ in sajdah is highly recommended.
➌ One may use the post-salah moment to express humility and gratitude through prostration.
