Ruling on Madhi and Wadi: Purity, Consensus, and Ghusl

❖ What Are Madhi and Wadi?

📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What are Madhi and Wadi?

❖ Answer:

Madhi is a thin fluid that exits from the urinary passage involuntarily due to arousal, such as during kissing or physical intimacy.

Wadi is a white, thick fluid that comes out after urination.

❖ Ruling Regarding Their Purity

Both Madhi and Wadi are impure (نجس) and ritually unclean.
Their ruling is the same as that of urine.
If they come into contact with the body or clothes, they must be washed.

❖ Scholarly Consensus

Imam al-Baghawi (رحمه الله, d. 516 AH) stated:
"There is consensus among the jurists on the impurity of Madhi and Wadi."
📘 (Sharh al-Sunnah, 2/90)

Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله, d. 676 AH) stated:
"The Ummah has unanimously agreed on the impurity of Madhi and Wadi."
📘 (Al-Majmu‘ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, 2/552)

❖ Does Emission of Madhi or Wadi Require Ghusl?

No, the emission of Madhi or Wadi does not necessitate Ghusl (ritual bath).

✔ Summary:

Madhi and Wadi are impure discharges — similar in ruling to urine. They require purification of the affected area or garment, but do not require a full-body ritual bath.
