Ruling on Keeping Rabbits as Pets in the Home

❖ Is Keeping a Rabbit at Home Permissible?​

Keeping a rabbit or any other pet at home is permissible in Islam, provided that the animal is cared for properly. This includes ensuring its nutrition, water, cleanliness, and overall well-being. There is no sin in keeping a pet as long as Islamic ethical guidelines are followed.

❖ Proof from the Practice of the Companions​

The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ are known to have kept animals. One example is that of Abu Umayr, the young brother of Anas رضي الله عنه, who had a pet bird. The Prophet ﷺ would lovingly inquire about it, showing approval of pet ownership.

❖ The Rights of Animals in Islam​

Islam places great importance on the rights of animals. The Prophet ﷺ warned against neglect or cruelty. In one narration, a woman was condemned to Hell for mistreating a cat by neither feeding it nor letting it free to eat from the earth. This highlights the seriousness of animal welfare in Islamic law.
