Question:

Can a walīmah be held before consummating the marriage with one’s wife?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Among the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥīn, there was a difference of opinion regarding the timing of the walīmah:

◈ Should it be held at the time of the marriage contract (ʿaqd al-nikāḥ)?
◈ Should it be held at the time of consummation (dukhūl)?
◈ Should it be held after consummation?
◈ Or is there flexibility to hold it at any time between the marriage contract and consummation?

Based on these views, scholars have expressed multiple opinions.

Best Practice

◈ The best and most virtuous is to hold the walīmah after the bride’s arrival (rukhsatī) and consummation, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

◈ However, if that is not possible, then there is no harm in holding the walīmah:
✿ Before consummation, or
✿ At the time of the marriage contract, or
✿ Any time after the contract and before consummation.
