Ruling on Hijab for Young Girls

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, which contains fatwas from the scholars of the Haramain. The translation is done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

Question:

At what minimum age does hijab and covering become obligatory for a girl?

Answer:

Undoubtedly, if a girl is still young and has not yet reached the age of seven years, then hijab and full covering are not obligatory upon her. However, once she reaches seven years of age, she is required to observe modesty and cover herself, as some scholars have explicitly stated.

However, the level of covering required for a young girl differs from that of an older woman. Allah is the Bestower of success.
