❖ Question:
What is the Sharʿī status of the Hadiths commonly cited about love for one’s homeland (ḥubb al-waṭan)? Are all such Hadiths considered weak or fabricated?
❖ Answer by: Fadīlat al-Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh
❖ ① Status of the Statement:
The well-known phrase:
"حب الوطن من الإيمان"
“Love for the homeland is part of faith.”
✔ According to the verdict of Hadith scholars, it is considered fabricated (mawḍūʿ).
✔ Therefore, it is not permissible to attribute this statement to the Prophet ﷺ as a Hadith.
❖ ② Indirect Evidence of Homeland Affection from Authentic Narrations
While the above phrase is not a Hadith, authentic narrations indirectly support the concept of natural love for one's homeland. Examples include:
✿ Love for Mount Uḥud
Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه:
"هَذَا جَبَلٌ يُحِبُّنَا وَنُحِبُّهُ"
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4083)
Translation: “This is a mountain that loves us, and we love it.”
✔ This Hadith reflects the Prophet’s ﷺ emotional connection to Uḥud, a symbol of his homeland.
✿ Expressing Love for Madinah on Returning from Travel
Whenever the Prophet ﷺ returned from a journey and saw Madinah, he would:
✔ Hasten his mount, out of love for the city
✔ This shows his emotional attachment to his homeland
✿ Supplication for Love of Madinah
The Prophet ﷺ prayed to Allah to instill love for Madinah in the hearts of the people:
He asked Allah to make Madinah as beloved to the believers as Makkah, or even more so.
✔ This is found in authentic narrations and highlights the spiritual and emotional connection to one's home.
❖ ③ Summary and Conclusion
✔ The statement "ḥubb al-waṭan min al-īmān" is not a Hadith and is fabricated.
✔ However, love for one’s homeland is a natural and acceptable emotion, supported indirectly by authentic Ahadith.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ himself displayed love for Madinah, Mount Uḥud, and prayed for its belovedness.
✔ Nevertheless, it is important to remember:
Love for country must not override love for Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the religion of Islam.
❖ Final Verdict:
◉ "حب الوطن من الإيمان" is not an authentic Hadith – it is mawḍūʿ (fabricated).
◉ Authentic Hadiths demonstrate that natural love for one’s land or region is valid and permitted.
◉ Such love should remain within the bounds of Sharīʿah and not supersede religious obligations.
