Ruling on Giving Adhan Before an Unconscious or Possessed Person

❖ What Is the Ruling on Giving Adhan in Front of an Unconscious Person?

📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to give Adhan (call to prayer) in front of someone who is unconscious (غشی طاری ہو)?

❖ Answer:

If a person has fallen unconscious due to influence of Shayatin (evil forces), then giving Adhan in front of him is permissible and appropriate, because Shayatin flee upon hearing the Adhan.

✅ Evidence from Hadith:

Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"When the call to prayer (Adhan) is made, the Shaytan turns and flees, breaking wind loudly so as not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is over, he returns."
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 608; Sahih Muslim: 389)

✅ Commentary by Scholars:

Imam Abu ‘Awanah (رحمه الله) wrote under this Hadith:

"This is evidence that if a man senses the presence of jinn (ghoul) or approaches someone possessed (by jinn), and then gives Adhan near him, the effects of the jinn will go away."
📘 (Mustakhraj Abi ‘Awanah, under Hadith no. 977)

❖ Conclusion:

✔ If unconsciousness is due to jinn possession or evil influence, giving Adhan is legislated and beneficial.
✔ This practice is based on authentic Hadith and the understanding of classical scholars.
✔ It serves as a means of protection and repelling the Shayatin.

✔ Key Point:
📢 Giving Adhan in the presence of a person unconscious due to demonic possession is permissible and beneficial, as it causes Shayatin to flee.
