❖ Question

Some people make special arrangements for food on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and present a Hadith mentioning "expanding food provisions" as evidence. What is the correct ruling regarding this matter?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

The narration related to expanding food provisions on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ is weak (ḍaʿīf). Some scholars have shared their personal experiences regarding this, but it should be made absolutely clear that:

Sharīʿah is not established upon personal experiences.
No action or belief in religion can be validated merely on the basis that someone felt a personal benefit or blessing in it.

Therefore, to expand food provisions on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ considering it to be Sunnah or a prescribed practice is not correct according to Sharīʿah, as it is not based on any authentic Hadith.
