Question:
If a person is offering a Sunnah prayer, can another person join him in congregation and offer his obligatory (Fard) prayer behind him?
Answer:
Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!
Alhamdulillah, wa-s-salatu wa-s-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d:
Examination of the Issue:
There is no clear or explicit evidence known to me that allows a person performing Fard prayer to join behind someone offering a Sunnah prayer.
Some people infer its permissibility by analogy with the well-known Hadith of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (RA) regarding Tahajjud, where he prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ.
However, due to the absence of a clear textual proof, it is better to avoid such a practice.
A Well-Established Juridical Principle:
If the Imam is praying a Nafl (voluntary) prayer while the follower performs a Fard prayer,
then both prayers are valid.
