Ruling on Drinking Water After a Meal

Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Volume 1

❖ Question

Is drinking water after eating food considered a Sunnah or not?

❖ Answer

Water is essential for human life; Allah ﷻ has created man from flowing water (ماء دافق), and without it, human survival is not possible.

From a Sharʿī (Islamic legal) perspective, there is no prohibition on drinking water whenever needed. One may drink water at any time based on personal need.

As for the specific act of drinking water after eating food being a Sunnah, there is no known narration to support this practice as Sunnah. It depends entirely on individual need—if one feels the need, they may drink water, and if not, they may refrain.

However, from a medical standpoint, drinking water immediately after eating can be harmful, as it may cause disruption in the digestive process.
