❖ What Is the Ruling If Congregational Prayer in the Masjid Is Delayed Beyond the Preferred Time?

📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

If the congregation (Jama‘ah) in the mosque is delayed beyond the preferred (مختار) time, what is the ruling?

❖ Answer:

It is obligatory to offer prayers on time, and deliberately delaying them beyond the preferred time — especially on a regular basis — is not permissible.

✅ Instruction from the Prophet ﷺ in This Scenario:

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"You may encounter people who delay the prayer beyond its (appointed) time. If that happens, then offer your prayer at its proper time at home, and then join them in their prayer with the intention of a voluntary (nafl) prayer."
📘 (Musnad Ahmad: 1/379; Sunan Ibn Majah: 1255)
🔹 Chain graded Hasan
🔹 Declared Sahih by Ibn al-Jarud and Ibn Khuzaymah

✅ Similar Hadith in

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"What will you do when your leaders delay the prayers?" I asked, "What do you command me to do, O Messenger of Allah?" He said:
"Offer the prayer at its proper time, and then offer it with them as well — it will count as a nafl prayer for you."

📘 (Sahih Muslim: 648)

✅ Explanation by Scholars:

Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله, d. 676 AH) commented:

"Delaying the prayer means causing it to lose its spirit and vitality. The intended meaning of 'delaying the time' is delaying it beyond the preferred time (مختار وقت), not the entire valid time window, because rulers in every era have been known to delay the prayer from the preferred time — not to the extent of completely missing the time."

✅ Condemnation of Delaying the Prayer:

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Soon after me, government affairs will fall into the hands of those who will abandon the Sunnah and practice innovations, and they will delay the prayers."
I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, if I live to see such a time, what should I do?"
He ﷺ replied:
"O son of Umm ‘Abd! You're asking me what to do? There is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah."
📘 (Musnad Ahmad: 1/399; Sunan Ibn Majah: 2865) — 🔹 Chain is Hasan

❖ Summary and Ruling:

Deliberate and consistent delay of congregational prayer beyond the preferred time is not allowed.
✔ If the Masjid delays the prayer past the ideal time, a person should:
Pray on time at home, and then
Join the congregation with the intention of a nafl prayer.

✔ Following such imams (who delay the prayers wrongfully) should not lead to neglecting the prayer time, as obedience to Allah takes precedence over following misguided leaders.

✔ Key Point:
🕰 When congregational prayer in the mosque is delayed beyond its proper time without valid excuse, the Sunnah is to pray on time first and then join the congregation as nafl.
