Ruling on Breaking an Oath to Avoid Wedding Customs

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpuri

Question:

A person took an oath to abandon ignorant customs at a wedding, but later performed those customs. What is the ruling?

Answer:

He has broken his oath; therefore, the expiation (kaffārah) of an oath becomes obligatory upon him. He should ensure that whatever action is recommended (mustaḥabb) is fulfilled.

The Command of Allah Almighty is:

﴿وَاحْفَظُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ﴾

📚 [Al-Māʾidah: 89]

Translation:

“And safeguard your oaths. Thus Allah makes His verses clear to you, so that you may be grateful.”
