Ruling on Attending a Funeral After Travelling a Long Distance

❖ Question

Is there any example in the Hadith collections of someone travelling a long distance specifically to attend a funeral?

❖ Answer by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (ḥafiẓahullāh)

There is no example of this found from the pious predecessors. In reality, such matters depend upon the relationship one has with the deceased. In the present era, information is received quickly and travel has become more accessible.
If someone wishes to undertake a long journey to attend a funeral, it does not contradict any Islamic principle. Likewise, such travel may be done for attending a wedding, walimah, or ‘aqiqah. There is no prohibition in Shari‘ah regarding this.
