Ruling on a Sick Pilgrim on the Day of ‘Arafah & Explanation of Making Up Missed Obligations
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
If a pilgrim becomes severely ill on the Day of ʿArafah and, due to illness, spends the night in Mina, unable to perform the stoning of the Jamarāt or the Tawaf, what is the ruling regarding his Hajj?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
If a person becomes so severely ill on the Day of ʿArafah that he cannot complete the Hajj, and he had stipulated at the time of entering Ihram:
“If I am prevented by any obstacle, then I will come out of Ihram at the place where I am prevented,”
Then:
✿ He may exit Ihram without any Fidyah.
✿ If it was his obligatory Hajj, he will have to perform it in another year.
If the pilgrim did not make such a condition and is unable to complete the Hajj due to illness, then according to the stronger opinion:
✿ He should exit Ihram.
✿ A sacrificial animal (Hady) will be obligatory upon him.
As Allah ﷻ says:
﴿فَمَن تَمَتَّعَ بِالعُمرَةِ إِلَى الحَجِّ فَمَا استَيسَرَ مِنَ الهَدىِ…﴾ (al-Baqarah: 196)
The phrase “if you are prevented” in the same verse includes all forms of prevention — whether caused by an enemy, illness, or any other hindrance. Iḥṣār (prevention) means any obstacle that stops a person from performing Hajj.
Therefore, in this case:
✿ The sick pilgrim should exit Ihram.
✿ Offer one sacrificial animal.
✿ If he has not yet performed his obligatory Hajj, he must do so in the following year.
If during the days of Hajj the sick person managed to reach Muzdalifah and performed the Wuqūf there, but:
✿ Did not spend the night in Mina
✿ Did not perform the stoning of the Jamarāt
Then:
✿ His Hajj is valid.
✿ But he must offer Dam (sacrificial animal) for leaving each Wājib:
➊ One Dam for not spending the night in Mina
➋ One Dam for not stoning the Jamarāt
When Allah ﷻ grants him recovery:
✿ He must perform Tawaf al-Ifādah.
According to the stronger opinion:
✿ Tawaf al-Ifādah can be performed until the end of Dhul-Hijjah.
✿ If it could not be performed due to an excuse, it may be done as soon as the excuse ends.

If no condition was made at the time of Ihram
