Ruling on a Muḥrim Woman Wearing Niqāb During Hajj — In Light of Hadith
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
What is the Sharʿī ruling on covering the face with a niqāb during Hajj?
There is a hadith prohibiting a muḥrim woman from wearing niqāb or gloves. At the same time, it is narrated from ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها:
“During the Hajj journey, when men would pass by us, we would lower our veils over our faces, and when they had passed, we would uncover our faces.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, al-Manāsik, Bāb fī al-Muḥrimah Taghṭī Wajhahā, Ḥadīth: 1833 — graded ‘weak’ by al-Albānī)
How can these narrations be reconciled?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
The correct and stronger view is as stated explicitly in the authentic hadith:
ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
(This is my opinion, and Allah knows best what is correct.)

Answer
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
Authentic Ruling from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ
The correct and stronger view is as stated explicitly in the authentic hadith:
- The Prophet ﷺ prohibited the muḥrim woman from wearing niqāb.
- This prohibition applies absolutely — whether or not non-maḥram men pass nearby.
- This ruling is valid in both Hajj and ʿUmrah.
- “Niqāb” refers to a face-covering designed with openings for the eyes.
Clarification of ʿĀ’ishah’s Statement
- The narration from ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها does not indicate that they wore niqāb.
- Rather, they covered their faces without wearing a niqāb.
- This shows that covering the face is permissible — but not by means of a niqāb.
When Non-Maḥram Men Pass By
- It is obligatory for a woman to cover her face when non-maḥram men are close.
- She should do so using another cloth or her upper garment, not a sewn niqāb.
Summary Ruling
- Wearing the niqāb in Ihram is harām.
- The preferable way is to keep the face uncovered in normal conditions, but to cover it (without a niqāb) in the presence of unrelated men.
