Ruling on a Filthy Shoe Falling into a Well with Limited Water

❖ Shar‘i Ruling on a Najis Shoe Falling into a Well

Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith – Kitab al-Taharah, Vol. 1, p. 19

❖ Question:

If a filthy (najis) shoe falls into a well with a small amount of water, does the water become impure?

❖ Answer:

✦ Juristic Ruling:

◉ If the quantity of water in the well is less than two qullahs (قلتین) and a najis shoe falls into it:

✔ The entire well becomes impure,
All the water must be extracted in order to purify it.

◉ If the water is equal to or more than two qullahs, then:

The water remains pure,
Unless the najis substance causes a change in color, smell, or taste.

✦ Clarification:

The effect of impurity entering water depends on the quantity of water:

Less than qullatayn (قلتین) → the water becomes impure upon contact with any impurity, regardless of visible change.
Qullatayn or more → the water only becomes impure if the impurity alters its characteristics (i.e., color, smell, or taste).

✔ Conclusion:

◈ If a najis shoe falls into a well containing less than qullatayn, the water becomes impure, and it is obligatory to extract all of it.
◈ If the water is qullatayn or more, it remains pure unless physical change occurs.
