What is Tawarruk?
Tawarruk refers to sitting on the left buttock while placing the left foot under the right leg, with the right foot upright, during the final tashahhud of certain prayers.
When is Tawarruk Sunnah?
- Tawarruk is Sunnah in the final tashahhud of prayers that have two tashahhuds, such as:
✿ Ẓuhr
✿ ʿAṣr
✿ Maghrib
✿ ʿIshāʾ - It is not prescribed in prayers that have only one tashahhud, such as Fajr.
Ruling for Men and Women
- The ruling of tawarruk applies equally to both men and women.
- The principle in Islamic law is that men and women share the same rulings in acts of worship unless there is specific evidence to differentiate them.
- In the case of tawarruk, there is no authentic evidence showing that women should sit differently in prayer.
- Therefore, men and women should perform tawarruk in the same manner during the prayers where it is Sunnah.
Conclusion: Tawarruk is Sunnah in the final tashahhud of four- and three-unit prayers for both men and women.
