Reunion of Spouses in Paradise

By Sheikh Zubair Ali Za’i (ḥafizahullāh)

1. The Question

Some claim that, on the Day of Resurrection, believing husbands and wives—even if both enter Paradise—will not remain together, and that a woman of this world will never reunite with her worldly spouse in the Hereafter. They further insist that even the Prophet’s ﷺ own wives will not be with him. Such a view, if true, would conflict with numerous Qur’ānic verses and authentic ḥadīths.

2. Qur’ānic Evidence

ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ أَنْتُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ تُحْبَرُونَ
“Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, in happiness.”
(Az-Zukhruf 43:70)

  • Key Point: The term أَزْوَاجُكُمْ (azwājukum)—“your spouses”—clearly denotes wives for men, and by parallel understanding, husbands for women when addressed.
  • Scholarly Note: As explained in Tafsīr al-Jalālayn, this verse unambiguously affirms that believers enjoy marital reunion in Paradise.

3. Distinguishing Wives and Ḥūr al-ʿĀyn

Verses stating that its inhabitants will never be touched by man or jinn (e.g., al-Wāqiʿah 56:35–38) refer to the ḥūr al-ʿayn—the pure maidens of Paradise—not to worldly spouses.

Two Categories in Paradise:
Ḥūr al-ʿĀyn: Created solely for the Hereafter, untouched by any living being.
Worldly Believing Spouses: Recreated and perfected to join their mates in eternal joy.

4. Prophetic Ḥadīth on “Last Spouse”

From Umm al-Dardā’ al-Ṣughrā (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhā):
“The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘A woman belongs to her last husband.’”
(Ḥasan – al-Muṣṭadrak 3/37; al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah 3/1281)

  • When ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ proposed marriage to Umm al-Dardā’, she refused, citing the Prophet’s ﷺ clear statement that she would remain the wife of Abū al-Dardā’ in this world and the Next.

5. Supporting Scholarly Testimonies

Imam Shuʿbī (d. 160 AH):
“Those are the wives of worldly people, whom Allah will recreate in an even finer form for Paradise.”
(Al-Ba‘th wa an-Nashūr)

Imam Abū Ya‘lā al-Mawṣilī (d. 458 AH):
Narrates Umm al-Dardā’s refusal and records the Prophet’s ﷺ explicit link between a woman and her last husband in both worlds.

6. Prophetic Affirmations to ʿĀ’ishah (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhā)

Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (7094–7052):
“O ʿĀ’ishah, you are my wife in this world and in the Hereafter.”

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (3772):
“Surely she (ʿĀ’ishah) is your wife in this world and the Next.” – ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir

7. Conclusion & Reminder

Worldly spouses who both attain Paradise will reunite and live together there.
Ḥūr al-ʿayn remain distinct as the untouched maidens of Paradise.
③ Anyone denying the reunion of believing husbands and wives contradicts clear Qur’ānic text and sound Prophetic traditions.

“Tell the truth, even if against yourselves,”
and hold fast to the authentic Qur’an and Sunnah.

May Allah reunite us with our righteous spouses and honor us with His everlasting mercy. Ameen.
