Rejecting the Truth Merely Because Its Followers Are Weak

Authored by: Sheikh al-Islam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (رحمه الله), Translated by: Maulana Mukhtar Ahmad Nadwi (حفظه الله)

One of the common attitudes of the people of ignorance was their refusal to accept the truth simply because its followers were weak and poor. Their rejection stemmed from arrogance and pride. Allah has refuted this behavior in the Quran:

"And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. You are not accountable for them in anything, nor are they accountable for you in anything. If you were to drive them away, you would then be among the wrongdoers. Thus We have tested some of them through others, that they might say, ‘Is it these whom Allah has favored among us?’ Does not Allah know best those who are grateful?"

(Surah Al-An'am, 6:52-53)

Additionally, Allah says:

"He frowned and turned away because there came to him the blind man."

(Surah Abasa, 80:1-2)

This shows that those considered weak by society embraced the truth based on reason and understanding, not for any personal gain, as their opponents claimed. The Prophet (ﷺ) was not responsible for their actions, nor were they responsible for his. Therefore, it would be a grave injustice to turn these weak individuals away from the path of faith.
