Refutation of the False Story Attributed to Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA)

Refutation of the False Accusation Against Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA)

Source:
Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah (Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām), Vol. 2, p. 271

Background: Qurʾānic Verses

In Sūrah al-Tawbah, Allāh ﷻ says:

(al-Tawbah: 75–77)

These verses refer to certain people who vowed to give charity if blessed with wealth, but later became miserly, resulting in hypocrisy being placed in their hearts.

The Story Attributed to Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA)

Some books of tafsīr, such as Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, narrate a story claiming these verses were revealed about Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA). The narration alleges:

  • He asked the Prophet ﷺ to make duʿāʾ for his wealth.
  • His flocks multiplied, he moved far from Madīnah, and stopped attending congregational prayers.
  • When the order for zakāh came, he refused, calling it “the sister of jizyah.”
  • The Prophet ﷺ supposedly rejected his zakāh thereafter, as did Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān (RA).

Chain Analysis & Authenticity

1. Main Chain in Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī and Tafsīr Ibn Abī Ḥātim

Chain: Muʿān ibn Rifāʿah → ʿAlī ibn Yazīd → Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān → Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī (RA)

  • ʿAlī ibn Yazīd al-Alhānī – munkar al-ḥadīth (Imām al-Bukhārī), matrūk al-ḥadīth (al-Nasāʾī)
  • Muʿān ibn Rifāʿah – weak (līn al-ḥadīth)

Verdict: Isnād is very weak; text is false (ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Mahdī, Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr 3/417).

2. Chain via Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-ʿAwfī from Ibn ʿAbbās (RA)

  • Multiple narrators in the chain are weak or deviant:
    • Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-ʿAwfī – weak
    • Saʿd ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAwfī – Jahmī (deviant)
    • Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥasan – weak
    • al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAṭiyyah – weak
    • ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī – poor memory, mudallis

Verdict: Chain is fabricated/rejected.

3. Chain: Ibn Ḥumayd → Salamah → Ibn Isḥāq → ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd → al-Ḥasan

  • Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd al-Rāzī – weak
  • ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd – liar, fabricator

Verdict: Fabricated (mawḍūʿ).

4. Narration from Qatādah

  • No mention of Thalabah (RA) in the text.
  • Weak due to tadlīs in chain.

5. Narration from Mujāhid

  • Again, Thalabah (RA) not named.
  • Weak for same reasons.

Scholarly Conclusion

After reviewing all chains and versions:

  • All isnāds are either very weak or fabricated.
  • No authentic narration establishes that these verses were revealed about Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA).
  • This story is a baseless fabrication from storytellers, not supported by reliable evidence.

Important Clarification

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar explains:

  • Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib al-Anṣārī al-Badrī (RA) is a distinct Companion.
  • Another person named Thalabah ibn Abī Ḥāṭib al-Anṣārī (non-Badrī) is a different Companion.

(al-Iṣābah, p. 156, no. 970, Dār al-Afkār ed.)

Final Ruling:
The accusation against Thalabah ibn Ḥāṭib (RA) is false, fabricated, and impermissible to narrate without exposing its falsehood.
