❖ Evidence for the Obligation of Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah Behind the Imām

Ḥadīth of Abū al-Dardāʾ رضي الله عنه

(al-Nasāʾī 923; Musnad Aḥmad 21720; authenticated by Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾūṭ)

Translation:
Abū al-Dardāʾ رضي الله عنه narrated: A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is there recitation in every prayer?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Yes.” An Anṣārī companion then said: “This means it is wājib.”

Statement of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn

(al-Sharḥ al-Mumtiʿ, vol. 3, p. 75; Ṣifat al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Wujūb al-Qirāʾah Khalf al-Imām)

Translation:
Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله said: “Recitation of al-Fātiḥah is wājib in every ṣalāh, and it is wājib in every rakʿah upon the imām, the individual praying alone, and the follower. Its proof is the narration of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit رضي الله عنه, where the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Do not recite behind the imām except with Umm al-Qurʾān (al-Fātiḥah), for there is no ṣalāh for the one who does not recite it.’”

Ḥadīth of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth 756)

Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.”

Imām al-Kirmānī

(ʿUmdat al-Qārī, vol. 3, p. 63)

Translation:
Imām al-Kirmānī رحمه الله said: “This ḥadīth (of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit) is clear proof that recitation of al-Fātiḥah is wājib upon the imām, the one praying alone, and the follower, in all prayers.”

Shaykh Ibn Bāz

(Majmūʿ Fatāwā Ibn Bāz, vol. 11, p. 109; Ṣifat al-Ṣalāh, Bāb Ḥukm al-Qirāʾah fī al-Fātiḥah fī Kull Rakʿah)

Translation:
Ibn Bāz رحمه الله said: “Recitation of al-Fātiḥah is a pillar (rukn) in every rakʿah for the imām and the individual praying alone, and it is wājib upon the follower in every rakʿah as well. This is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: ‘There is no prayer for the one who does not recite al-Fātiḥah.’ Thus, the imām must recite it in every rakʿah, the individual must recite it in every rakʿah, and likewise the follower.”

❖ Conclusion

In light of the authentic aḥādīth and the statements of leading scholars:

Recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is wājib (obligatory) in every rakʿah,
✔ Whether one is the imām, an individual praying alone, or a follower (maʾmūm).

Neglecting the recitation of al-Fātiḥah invalidates the prayer, as explicitly stated in the ḥadīth of the Prophet ﷺ:
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite al-Fātiḥah.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 756)
