This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mosuli's Arabic book Al-Awamer wal Nawaahi, whose Urdu translation has been done by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar Sahib under the title Ahkamaat o Mamnooat.
① Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would give me something, I would say: Please give it to someone more in need than me. He narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
خذه إذا جاءك من هذا المال شيء و أنت غير مشرف ولا سائل فخذه فتموله و إن شئت فكله و إن شئت فتصدق به ، وما لا فلا تتبعه نفسك
"If such wealth comes to you without asking and without waiting, then take it and merge it with your own wealth, and if you wish, eat it, and if you wish, give it as charity. And if it is not such wealth, then do not pursue it."
Salim bin Abdullah narrates that for this reason Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) never asked anyone for anything, and if something was given to him (unasked), he would not return it (he would accept it).

① Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when we were commanded to give charity, we would carry the charity wealth on our backs. Then a man came and gave a lot in charity. People said: He is a show-off. And another man came and gave one Sa' (approximately one and a quarter to two kilograms) in charity, and those people said: Allah is independent of him.
Then Allah revealed this verse:
﴿الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ﴾
"Those who malign the Muslims who give generously in charity and those who have nothing but their hard labor..."
