Source: Fatāwā Amunpūrī by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpūrī
❖ Question
Is it permissible to perform raml (walking briskly with shoulders shaking) and iḍṭibāʿ (uncovering the right shoulder) during Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah or Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ?
❖ Answer
No. Performing raml and iḍṭibāʿ in Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah and Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ is not permissible. These acts are legislated only in Ṭawāf al-Qudūm (the arrival ṭawāf).
❖ Scholarly Consensus
◈ Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676H):
((اتفق العلماء على أنه لا يشرع فى طواف الإفاضة رمل ولا اضطباع))
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that raml and iḍṭibāʿ are not legislated in Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah.”
— Sharḥ Muslim 8/193
Conclusion
- Raml and iḍṭibāʿ are Sunnah only in Ṭawāf al-Qudūm.
- They are not legislated for Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah or Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ.
- This ruling is established by consensus of the scholars.
