Raising Hands for Duʿā at the Grave After Janāzah: Sunnah Evidence

Is Raising Hands for Duʿā at the Grave After Janāzah Sunnah?

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil, Janāzah Issues, Vol. 1, p. 256

❖ Question

Is it Sunnah to raise the hands in duʿā at the grave after the funeral prayer?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

Yes, making duʿā with raised hands at the graveyard for the deceased is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

❖ Evidences

✿ In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz, Bāb Mā Yuqāl ʿInda Dukhūl al-Maqābir
✿ In Sunan al-Nasāʾī, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz, Bāb al-Amr bi-l-Istighfār lil-Muʾminīn

These aḥādīth prove that when the Prophet ﷺ entered the graveyard, he would supplicate for the people of the graves, and raising the hands in this context is also established.

Furthermore:

✿ After burial, raising the hands in duʿā at the grave is also reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī ʿAwānah.

❖ Conclusion

All these evidences support the ruling that raising the hands in duʿā at the grave after the janāzah is Sunnah and established from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
